YOUR CHARACTER::
Name:: Thomas James Vicaro [TJ or Tommy]
Age:: 18
Grade:: Senior
Gender:: Male
Clique:: Rebels [If you make a "prince" can he have it?]
Personality::[2+ paragraphs]
TJ has a vibe about him that just says "I don't care, so leave me alone." He can be very friendly if you get to know him. But when he first meets you, he will not like you. Not at all. You have to talk to him a little bit, and try to let him get his guard down. This often takes quite a while. TJ is also very athletic. He is a huge fan of soccer, basketball, and rock climbing. During the summer, he actually volunteers at a diabetes camp and helps kids climb the rock wall, showing them that even with diabetes, you can do anything. Even if he doesn't follow that motto himself.
TJ is a party animal. You can find him out of the house almost every night when he's not grounded. This is actually a lot more than you would think, because TJ has tricks to getting ungrounded. He is very close to both of his parents, but prefers his brother's company to both of them. He hates when people care too much. Because he hates when people worry, whether it be about him or someone else. He hates worriers. And now, another topic. Art. TJ used to play an instrument, the trumpet. But he accidentally destroyed it, so he just quit. TJ can't draw either. But he loves reading and writing, he just never does it.
Appearance::[2+Paragraphs]
TJ is pretty tall for his age, towering over his short family at six feet and one inch tall. He weighs about one hundred and eighty eight pounds, most of which is muscle. He has very short dirty blonde [almost brown] hair. His eyes are a steel blue, but appear gray in the light, he loves his eyes though, and wouldn't have them any other way. TJ has multiple scars on his body. Most of them on his stomach and legs, for sites of his insulin pump that stayed in too long. And something that is always seen on his body is a white circular patch, with a tube coming out of it, connecting to a clear insulin pump.
TJ's clothing style is mostly tank tops, t-shirts, shorts, and jeans. He prefers to keep things simple. But sometimes, and he would never admit this, he lets his sister put make up on him. Especially when he's stuck at home on "watch." TJ is also always seen wearing a white, grey, or black baseball cap, because he doesn't like to get sunburned on his face and head area. TJ has his ears pierced. Once in each ear. He has two different types of earrings though. Sometimes he wears gold hoops, and other times, he wears silver "U" rings with huge balls on the end.

History[What got you here]::[3+ Paragraphs]
Thomas James Vicaro was born to 30 year old Adam Vicaro, and 29 year old Delia Vicaro. He was born on March 17th, 1989. At the time of Thomas's birth, he was their second child. Their first child? A five year old boy named Jacob. Thomas James was born perfectly healthy, especially for being born a week early. His mother was declared healthy as well.
Adam and Delia loved their second born child so much, that two years later, they decided to try to get pregnant again. It seemed that the moment Delia was declared pregnant for the third time, TJ, as he was now known, began to get very sick. His father claimed that it was jealousy. But his mother was nervous. She loved her son and didn't want anything to happen to him. So, Adam and Delia took TJ to the hospital, leaving Jacob with Grandma V. He was drinking water, going to the bathroom constantly, his vision was blurred, he was falling asleep, and he felt physically sick. Three hours later, two year old TJ Vicaro was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes.
It was very difficult for Adam and Delia to deal with TJ's diabetes. No one in their families had ever had it. Which meant that they were both carriers, and TJ had gotten the diabetic gene that they had carried for their entire lives. Another reason that the diabetes was so difficult for TJ's parents, was that they were both terrified of needles. Which were needed when dealing with a two year old diabetic, and any aged diabetic for that matter. When TJ turned three years old, his eight year old brother was helping him with his shots more than his parents were. They were busy with their new daughter Emma.
Emma's birth was difficult for Delia, because Emma was very sick when she was born. Both parents were paranoid that their only daughter was going to be a diabetic as well. Luckily for them, Emma was not a diabetic. But she was sick. She had to stay in the hospital for three weeks after her birth. Because she was born a month early, and her lungs were not completely developed yet. During this time, something horrible happened to TJ as well. The three year old experienced his first non-diagnosis diabetes-related hospital visit. Jacob and TJ were both worried about Emma, that they forgot to give TJ his insulin shot after lunch. TJ's blood sugar skyrocketed. And TJ was on the edge of having a coma.
Jacob ran and got their grandmother, who dialed 911 immediately. TJ was brought to the hospital and hooked up to an IV. TJ hadn't even been a diabetic for a full year yet, and here he was. Sitting in the hospital, slowly coming back to full consciousness. His blood sugar at this point? 543. His blood sugar is supposed to be between 80 and 120.
When Emma was finally brought home, TJ and Jacob returned to their parents side, and things began going well again. The five Vicaros lived a normal life, minus the after-meal shots, and before-meal finger stabbings. But on TJ's seventh birthday, his parents brought him a surprise. This surprise? An insulin pump. Their insurance did not fully cover the pump, so they had been saving up for five years to pay the very large co payment on one. TJ went to pump training the following week, and was hooked up to the pump almost immediately.
Things began to appear normal again. TJ was the first seven year old to carry a beeper, at least that's what his friends though, and for a little while that was what he thought as well. He was confused about the pump, and his parents and Jacob did most of the work for him. At age ten, TJ was much more independent. He was doing his own site changes, and he was testing himself, and he was giving himself his own insulin. His parents were still worried, but now they had more time to focus on Emma and Jacob. Jacob had been feeling more like a parent, and Emma had just been feeling like her parents didn't love her anymore.
And one day, TJ had a friend sleep over at his house. TJ's friend wanted to "see the beeper" and so he grabbed it off of TJ's bed, yanking on the pump site gently, but TJ didn't notice. The friend began pushing buttons, having no idea what he was doing. He ended up giving TJ eleven units of insulin. Now keep in mind, TJ has a correction factor, at this point, of 1 unit bringing him down 40 points. So if TJ's blood sugar was a perfect 120, which it wasn't, he would drop down to zero. Which would then kill him.
TJ began to have a seizure as the insulin entered his body. His blood sugar had been eighty before, which was slightly low for bedtime, but that was beside the point. The friend freaked out, grabbing Adam and Delia. TJ was rushed to the hospital for the third time in his life. TJ was given an injection of glucagon, a hormone that increases your blood glucose level, and he began to slowly rise. Once TJ was conscious again, he had no memory of what had happened, and his friend had gone home. Eleven year old TJ was now in middle school and officially hating his life. His friends were afraid to come over because of what had happened with the other kid. Jacob, who was now sixteen and learning about diabetes in school, began to teach TJ a little more in depth. He taught TJ how to explain what his pump was. The words were: "My pancreas doesn't work right, so this thing is keeping me alive." Those words were enough to keep hands off.
TJ was finally beginning to understand the disease he had had for nearly ten years. Middle school went pretty well overall. He ended up teaching a lot of people about diabetes. And he also learned that his best friend's mom was a diabetic. Although it sounds horrible, he was extremely happy to hear this. Because that meant that he could go over to that friend's house and his mom would know what TJ was talking about when he felt "high" and "low."
Once TJ entered high school, things began to get difficult. He began to care less and less about his diabetes, because he was more focused on making friends and partying. His blood glucose level began to become a steady 300. When the school nurse found out about this, his parents were informed immediately. TJ was put on watch. His parents had to test him before he ate, and they had to watch him bolus (give himself insulin) after he ate. They also had to sit there until the entire bolus went in, because there was a way TJ could turn it off, and he used it often when his parents weren't looking.
At age sixteen, TJ was not allowed to get his learner's permit. This was because he had been coming home drunk and high [blood sugar] on weekends. And sometimes on week nights as well. TJ was put on watch again. And he was beginning to get annoyed. He knew that he could have easily just taken care of it, but he didn't like when people knew. He didn't want people to feel sorry for him.
Now at age eighteen, TJ pretty much has things under control. He tests himself regularly, but his parents and the people around him still make sure he boluses. Because TJ is a great guy, and no one wants anything to happen to him.
